Breath of Life: Overcoming Anxiety and Improving Respiratory Health from Pranayama Breathing with Sumita Bhatia, MD

$25.00

Pranayama breathing is a sacred and ancient series of breathing techniques that can improve vitality and well being. The phrase Pranayama translates into vital energy. Breath is considered a vehicle for energy as without breath we cannot survive. We will learn the physiology of maximizing the oxygenation in the lungs. We will also learn of the benefits of deep belly breathing and the impact it has on cardiovascular health, mental health and respiratory health. Breathing is an everyday activity we take for granted. Many people are breathing using intercostal muscles alone. We will review medical physiology as well as the data supporting the benefits of Pranayama breathing.  A series of videos will be shown to demonstrate Pranayama breathing techniques. We will end with a guided practice where this breathing technique can be practiced. These techniques can instantly change your physiology and alter your nervous system from the sympathetic fight or flight response to parasympathetic rest and digest response.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the benefit of Pranayama breathing in times of COVID

  • Learn the physiology behind benefits of Pranayama breathing

  • Learn initial Pranayama breathing technique that can be practiced at home
