Integrative Care for Stage 4 Cancer: Notes from the Field of Living and Dying with Ann Marie Chiasson, MD, MPH

$25.00

Worth 1 CE

In this session, we will begin with a discussion of the evidence and appropriate use for integrative therapies for symptom and pain management in stage 4 common cancers. This will include specific mind-body modalities(1,2,3) adjunct medications (4) (including ketamine), acupuncture5 and movement and energy therapies (6,7,8).  In addition, integrative care for stage 4 cancer patients requires a thoughtful exploration of preparing some patients and families for death. We will discuss integrative medicine therapies for end-of-life care from the perspective of death and dying through the eyes of the patient, families, and practitioners.  Preparation of patients and families about some of the common psychodynamic and energetic events that occur leading up to death will be discussed and simple tools to assist with the ease of transition.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand central sensitization that occurs from chronic pain in cancer patients

  • Delineate the evidence and indications for integrative therapies to decrease pain in stage 4 cancer

  • Educate clinicians about indicators of death in End of Life care

  • Learn 3 techniques (guided imagery, energy healing, energy assessment) to assist families and patients at end of life
